Shop Local: Run to Live

Everyone is welcome. Anyone can run. That is the ethos behind Run to Live; an independent, specialist running shop that works hard to put the fun into running across the local community.

Established eight years ago to provide a personal service to people looking for trainers that truly fit (using their Gait analysis service) and running gear that fends off the wind and rain, it was a natural progression to set up a Run to Live running club that caters for all types of runners.

Hills Are Friends is a common mantra used by founder Nicky Donbavand and Penny Pretty, who helps manage Run to Live, to encourage even the most novice of runners. In fact, Nicky and Penny have their own interesting, but contrasting, stories behind they love of running.

For Nicky, running is a way of life, used as a mode of transport growing up in County Durham. While for Penny, inspiration came later in life after being motivated to run the London Marathon by a friend - and never looked back.

Noticing a gap in the market for running events with a broad appeal, Nicky branched out setting up Events to Live to start organising her own runs, with the same aim as Run to Live; to create fun events that people enjoy taking part in.

From The Surrey Badger and The Three Mole Hills to their flagship Bacchus event at Denbies Wine Estate (which included 1500 runners in 2015 enjoying a bit of wine tasting along the way), the team has certainly succeeded in that aim.

Nicky says: ”We are all about celebrating participation. Whether that’s when you start out and come to the shop for guidance, join the running club, take part in a race or even use the marathon training advice we’ve provided to charities such as Children’s Trust and the Samaritans.”

“We’ve definitely had a lot of fun along the way, meeting a wide spectrum of people and watching them on their running journey,” adds Nicky. “We will continue to inspire people to take up the sport and achieve what many think is unachievable - because we've seen that you can.”
