Shop Local: Hammonds

25-11-2015
As Christmas is upon us, and with Small Business Saturday fast approaching,  we wanted to turn the spotlight on local, independent businesses to find out if the Keep Trade Local community spirit is alive and well in Surrey.

Hammonds Butchers - Ashtead, Surrey
Nothing is more traditional at Christmas than ordering a turkey from your local butcher. Step forward Hammonds Butchers, one of three butchers in Ashtead that has been serving the local community since 1948, and is still going strong.

Hammonds, named after legendary cricketer Walter 'Wally' Hammond, recently went through an extensive brand re-design and shop re-fit that balances the modern - a Facebook page and website were also launched - with its traditional origins.

Locally sourced, high quality produce, realistic pricing and a personal service are at the centre of Hammonds' approach to business. Master Butcher, Clive Elson, says: "People trust their butcher in a way that supermarkets can't replicate. I'm on first name terms with my regular customers and know what meat they want for their weekly order before they walk through the door. People also have a renewed focus on understanding the origins of the produce they are buying, and like the fact that we source our meat from the same regions and suppliers we have been using for years."

While the legacy of Hammonds is clear, when it comes to its continuing success, Clive, who has been in the trade for 25 years, is in no doubt about where the future lies. "The surrounding community is vital to our business," says Clive. "90% of our customers are locals, looking for great quality meat alongside a friendly, personal service. Our customers will often bring their children to the shop, which is so important as it helps introduce the next generation to the value of having a butchers right around the corner."
